so our child (thanks to a fridge magnet at erin and drew's house) is obsessed with the empire state building and King King (or king kon - as carlos is wont to say). well, now we've got our very own version of it in the form of legos. pretty cool.
this is my skinny husband (say happy birthday! today he's 45!!!) and his lovely sister, the most awesome, jessie :)we're off to North Beach Snack Bar for dinner and then to watch the bike races in Shorewood :)

5K in Hartland Wisconsin

here i am finishing the 5K in Run to the Peak in Hartland WI. I figured it'd be fun to run a race on my birthday :) I am so proud of myself because i ran the race in 34 (plus some) minutes - and my last race was 38 minutes. Not only that, but there was a nice sized hill in the course as well and my lungs didn't even explode!

thanks to the heart rate monitor adam got me for my birthday i was able to pace myself without injury.

now it's the day after and my legs are only a little tiny bit sore! yeehaaaaa

For some reason the boy asked for a "Salad and Cheese sandwich. This from someone who won't eat a piece of pizza that has a speck of green on it. He insisted, took a bite and asked me to take the mayo off! Then said he didn't like it so went back to his pepperoni pizza. No vegetarian here!

Jumping in the Deep End!

You can't force him to learn to swim or jump into the deep end of the pool, but when he works up to it you just have to be in the right place at the right time. He has never had a formal lesson nor will he listen to us teach him to swim; he simply watches, tries things on his own and eventually gets it. I hope learning to read works the same way!!

we went to Elizabeth's on 37th for dinner while carlos went to spend time with coley. it was a very nice night!

okay, is there anything cuter than THIS face???? coley is one of our best friends and our celebrations would not be nearly as fun and exciting without him and his mommy, Paula. of course, coley has now started asking to do absurdly dangerous things when he's over - i imagine it's just to see my reaction - and i can only guess what friend (who's name starts with a "c" ) has had this particular influence on him???

carlos' 6th birthday celebration

carlos spent much of the day putting his new darth vader ship together. we had a small party with just a few friends - not that it was QUIET :) - but it was small and fun. we got out the easy set pool (adam is signaling the death knell for it because it's such an unbelievable pain to maintain and take down). it was a fun day with perfect weather and good friends :)

julie and shauna visit savannah

we had a great visit with julie and shauna - carlos warmed up to them both very nicely. adam took carlos to the beach on the special kindergarten trip to Tybee.

we think julie and shauna brought the cold weather to savannah - record cold and rain for May. of course, i don't mind the coolness - it means that we have less of the high heat for a while. great running weather :)

we'll miss our visitors but we're glad they came!

Our new Tandem

Juan Carlos had some issues with riding his own bike so I found a tandem that we can ride together. We rode 10 miles today all over the neighborhood and he is now asking to go for rides. I can't wait for the summer when we can ride everyday! We may even ride to school next week!

this here is called Bugs and dirt - a delicious (depending on your definition of delicious - if you are five....) combination of chocolate pudding, oreo cookies smashed up, and gummi worms.

someone found my peter pan costume upstairs. it's tough to get a picture these days with his mouth closed. where the heck would he get that from?

i guess you could call me the vanna white of owl exhibits. i was so fortunate to be the person to hold the great horned owl for the exhibit today. it was so fun!!!!! owls look like they are heavy, but this one was a hefty 3 lbs. ooooh.

Heidi made this cool chefs hat for the boy and they made muffins. I then came in the house after a day of yard work only to see Carlos mixing pancake batter on the kitchen table. Of course he wanted to cook them so I got out the griddle. The rest was all him! No burns and now he can cook his own breakfast!

spring break part deux

on my runs around the park (it was a very nice multiuse park and campground) i saw the resident peacock. i also saw osprey and a pair of sandhill cranes. LOVE it!

adam and joe posing as dinosaurs - we really really tried to get carlos in there, but he was cranky. poor kid had a fever most of the trip - and his appetite finally came back the day we left for savannah. he still had a good time, though.

spring break

we went to the zoo with mom, dad and joe while on spring break. the weather was incredible! this is me feeding the loraqueets (sp?) at the zoo. my favorite part :) we didn't get pooped on!
carlos got a cool fake snake at the zoo and tormented nana every day with it. poor nana, she was a really good sport, though i'm not sure it's helped her snake phobia.....

this is joe, dad and carlos at the pond that was behind our campsite. the campground was about 7 miles from mom and dad's - so we had the best of both worlds: camping AND then spending time with family. we spent all wednesday at our campground - we stopped at a nice produce store and got cheeses, beer, wine, hummus, crackers - and just relaxed. i think our friend, scooby (our mockingbird at home) followed us to florida - because we had a mockingbird join us for food.
this is uncle joe tickling carlos (and carlos conspicuously avoiding the camera). we spent many hours playing on the wii at mom and dad's.

spring break

we leave tomorrow for Fla - to spend time with mom and dad and the mysterious brother, joe. mom has struggled mightily for months with her knee replacement surgery and the aftermath. so, it'll be good to spend time with them - since coming to visit us would be rough on them (dad has had some back trouble too). we are getting ready to camp - we found a site about 10 miles from where mom and dad live - so we won't be invading their space.

adam had a regatta this weekend so carlos and i got to spend some quality time together. naturally, he woke up this morning with a fever. now, this kid hasn't been sick for a year - at least - so we can't really complain. so after he woke up at 4:30 with a fever (not too high) i took him to the dr. he has a virus - some sort of flu - but hopefully a mild one. the day was to be spent packing while adam was gone, but it was mostly spent trying to get this kid to eat something.

the dr figured that a cbc would be best but since he was somewhat dehydrated, the blood was not flowing. therefore, he had to be poked twice and it nearly did ME in. i almost passed out - and he (poor thing) was crying while the nurse tried to get his precious drop of blood.

anyway, it's not bacterial - the ever mysterious virus - which can't really be treated with anything but love and fluids. so, we will still cross state lines with viruses in tact. i hope hope hope adam and i will avoid it, not likely however.

let's hope the trip goes well - we leave early in the morning. we hope to experience the shuttle launch - :)

Thanks to Diane and Suz (my two closest friends) encouraging me to do the Shamrock Run this year!!! I'll be 41 and I've run my first race. Not too bad! I met my goal of finishing (woohooo) and my time was 37:08. I don't have anything to compare it to since i don't time myself on my runs, but i think that's pretty darn good! i look forward to other runs now :) Now, if i can find my earbuds that i lost after the race, all will be terrific! (yeah, doubtful). It's a good thing i keep spares.....

snow day savannah style

no pictures today - i didn't get home until after 6pm. blech! carlos and adam had the day off since it has been 20 degrees at night and warming up to about 40 or so - and the school's heating system failed. my office, on the other hand, is a toasty (and unwelcome) 80 degrees. i feel like i work in a rainforest for heaven's sake.

i dont' have much of an idea as to what those two were up to all day. all i know is that we all got a chance to sleep in (snuggled up in the warmth of our cozy beds) and then while i was gone, the living room turned into carlos' playhouse. we finally got rid of his cardboard box apartment (fancy, too, split level). so, he decided that making a tent out of the living room furniture, chairs, pillows, sheets - would suffice.

at least tomorrow is friday. yay.

right now, the boys are reading on the bed = working on homework. today we tried to watch "bedknobs and broomsticks" but carlos just didn't get into it. so, we had to resort to High School Musical - again. that's okay, though, it's sweet and there's nothing to worry about when he watches it. in fact, it's so much less violent than star wars and the on going battles against darth maul. WHICH, by the way, i've never understood how this kid can be afraid of a jaguar that doesn't exist and dosen't even blink an eye when he sees darth maul. strange.

this kid is so cute, if i could i'd get a video of him dancing to HSM. I'm telling you, it's adorable. of course, he dosent like anyone watching him when he watches tv because i can't help admiring his dance moves. he wants to be Troy in every way : no hair cuts - so he's got hair in his eyes which is floppy and dishelveled. he keeps cutting his t-shirts up into basketball shirts - complete with numbers, OH YEAH, he draws in underarm hair on his skin because the boys on HSM have hair there. he's got a lot of the dance moves down. occasionally he likes to be the "brooding" troy - then he wants to wear a coat and tie.

oh yeah, i finally got him to wear his new sneakers - which have been laying around for 3 months - because he didn't like the shoelaces. it's hard to find the specific sneakers they are allowed to wear that also have velcro on them. the only way to get him to wear the new sneakers was to "lose" the old ones. am i going to hell for lying to my son, just to get him to wear shoes that fit? i don't know. i do know that he's more comfortable at least.

we got the Wii, so we've not been as couch potatoey as we normally are. carlos has gotten very adept at baseball and bowling. it's very cute watching him play.

the lego obsession lives on. we had to buy a larger container to fit all the legos - which was like christmas to him. he loves the box (and it's not entirely opaque so you can see the pieces better).

lastly, he is still enthralled by the statue of liberty. he takes this pencil sharpener statue of liberty and stacks various boxes on top of the book shelf and then puts the pencil sharpener on top of that.

it's so interesting to watch a child play and see what he comes up with.

he just had his bath and gave me a kiss. apparently he forgot all about being angry with me for making him take a bath.

This is carlos and daddy watching High School Music videos on youtube. will carlos hate us when he's older for posting this? probably.
This is a strange little scenario - carlos is taking a nap ON daddy (not really - he's still for about 5 seconds) and his blanket is the pillowcase.

this morning when we did our usual round of grocery shopping, carlos, being as helpful as usual offered to carry some bags in. he's been an excellent help and i questioned the wisdom of allowing him to carry the two lightest bags: eggs and bread. can you see where this is going? yup. instead of dropping the bag that wouldn't break - some hinky thing happened, we don't know what and the eggs SMASHED. they are in a plastic container so we didn't have egg guts everywhere, though every single one broke. sigh. so, today i learned how to make and freeze 2 quiches - cheese quiche and spinach and cheese. he was pretty upset about doing it, and i really couldn't yell at him for it, because frankly, BOTH adam and i have done similar things in the past. and it was my fault for charging him with a questionable task in the first place. ah well.

when life gives you lemons (or eggs) make some lemonaide (or quiche).

registration - new semester for us all

the boys have been back at school all week - i've been fortunate enough to have this week to plan classes, schedules, syllabi, etc. adam complimented me on the house - since i've had a looser schedule i've made the beds, kept the house moderately clean, and cooked DELICIOUS and HEALTHY dinners :)

we got a giftcard from Bobbie for Borders - so we've been able to browse on the internet and find a bunch of digital downloads. now our commutes home from school are filled with the wholesome tunes from High School Musical. adam got a book, i got another yoga dvd, and we caved and got the first HSM movie. yikes.

i've actually started trying to work out the last few months. in december i invested in a pair of REAL sneakers (running shoes - whatever) and i've been running/walking almost every day. i've also got some great yoga videos so i do my cool down with a short yoga routine. i HOPE that once school starts i'll be able to continue on this part of my life. being 40 i've noticed that the old metabolism isn't what it used to be - EEEEEK.

Keeping Busy over the break

We are going to be leaving tomorrow for some camping adventures in FLA. We haven't told Carlos yet that we are going to go to Disney for a day - and he also dosen't know about Downtown Disney and Lego World. I'm pretty sure his head will explode :)

We've been lazing around all day (i actually ran today - another "we'll see if this lasts" sort of thing)but adam really needed a hair cut. Carlos does too, but it's like bathing a cat, so he's a bit shaggy. anyway, i got out there with the clippers and carlos expressed interest in helping out. SO, here are a few pics of him helping dad out with a trim.
